Maria Mataró, from the Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona (UBNeuro), is a professor at the department of Clinical Psychology and Psychobiology at the University of Barcelona with research expertise and interests on healthy cognitive and brain aging and cerebrovascular disease. The current projects aim to study non-pharmacological strategies –such as physical exercise, cognitive training, and mindfulness- to stimulate brain plasticity and improve brain health and cognitive functioning.

The Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona (UBNeuro), a national and international reference in neurosciences research, was constituted in 2015, in order to integrate and highlight the research in neurosciences by the University of Barcelona, and to boost synergies between all the main research disciplines of modern neurosciences. The Institute joins about 300 members from the Faculties of Psychology, Medicine, Biology and Pharmacy aiming to understand the central nervous system in all the analysis levels.

The University of Barcelona is one of the leading public institution of higher education in Catalonia, catering to the needs of the greatest number of students and delivering the broadest and most comprehensive offering in higher educational courses. The UB is also the principal centre of university research in Spain and has become a European benchmark for research activity, both in terms of the number of research programmes it conducts and the excellence these have achieved.
